Abstract

Basketball performance is shaped not only by physical conditioning and technical skill but also by the athlete’s capacity to regulate arousal, sustain attention, recover from errors, tolerate competitive pressure and remain psychologically flexible. This narrative review examines how Yoga, understood within the broader Indian Knowledge System (IKS), can be integrated with contemporary sport psychology to support psychological well-being and performance among basketball players. The paper synthesizes policy documents on IKS together with peer-reviewed evidence on yoga, pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, athlete mental health and basketball-specific performance. Current evidence suggests that yoga- and mindfulness-based practices can reduce stress and competitive anxiety, improve attention, mindfulness, psychological flexibility, sleep and flow and may support selected performance outcomes. Basketball-specific studies are particularly relevant: seven-week mindfulness intervention improved attention-related psychological skills and shooting performance in male collegiate players, while an eight-week mindfulness program improved mental toughness and free-throw performance under stressful conditions. Within an IKS framework, the eight-limbed model of yoga offers a structured progression from ethical self-regulation and disciplined habits to breath regulation, attentional control, meditation and integrated awareness. These elements map meaningfully onto the psychological demands of basketball, including decision-making under time pressure, emotional control after turnovers, attentional switching, team discipline and execution of free throws. The review proposes a practical, evidence-informed model for integrating brief yoga, pranayama and meditation modules into regular basketball training without replacing sport-specific conditioning. The paper concludes that yoga-based IKS practices are best positioned as complementary mental-performance and well-being strategies, with future research requiring basketball-specific randomized trials, standardized interventions, objective performance indicators and longer follow-up.
