Abstract

This study examines the relevance of Gandhian Swaraj for sustainable development and democratic governance in contemporary India. The Gandhian Swaraj is not just political freedom but also self-rule, self-discipline, social responsibility, equality, self-reliance, community participation and ethical public life. The study addresses how these principles can help deal with current issues like social injustice, environmental problems, over-centralization, non-uniform development and lack of citizen engagement. It especially examines the connection between Gandhian Swaraj and Sustainable Development, based on the concept of Gandhi – simple living, local production, village industries, responsible consumption, protection of nature, community welfare etc. The study also explores the importance of decentralisation and village self-governance for enhanced participatory and responsive democratic governance. The method of study is secondary research that involves books, research articles, journals, government reports, constitution provision, policy documents and reliable academic sources. The study ends that Gandhian Swaraj is a useful framework in the process of integrating democracy, sustainability, social justice and responsible citizenship with people-centred approach. It can contribute to inclusive, decentralized, accountable, environmentally responsible and participatory governance in modern India and empower communities to be active stakeholders on sustainable development and democratic governance.
